Jane Davidson, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, chose Bryant Homes’ Glasdir new build development in Ruthin to launch a new green standards policy for new buildings in Wales last week.
Glasdir, which is located on Northern Link Road, won the 2008 Welsh BREEAM award for its Eco homes. BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the key measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.
The launch of the new policy makes Wales the first part of the UK to set a national standard for sustainable buildings to be met through the planning system.
Sam Williams (pictured left), regional sales manager for Bryant Homes, said: “We were delighted to welcome Ms Davidson to Glasdir and proud that she chose our beautiful development to launch the new national standard for sustainability.
“Glasdir clearly demonstrates how new homes developments can offer more sustainable living, as well as providing crucial information in planning for the government’s future targets for carbon neutral homes. In winning a prestigious BREEAM award we have proved at Glasdir that sustainability is not primarily about using less energy but also about reducing the use of other resources, promoting a vibrant community for all to enjoy and providing a healthy and attractive environment in which to live.”
The new green standards will mean that new homes must reduce their carbon emissions by more than 31 per cent compared to current building regulations through energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, reduce the consumption of water and use more sustainable materials.
