Teaching site safety to children

Derbyshire Children Received A Lesson In Site Safety

22/09/2009 - Events

Pupils at Woodville Infant School received a great lesson in staying safe during the summer holidays from leading local house-builder Taylor Wimpey North Midlands.

The special Building Site Safety assembly welcomed a building mascot from Bryant Homes’ The Coppice development in Swadlincote, and his colleague, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, Daniel McGowan.

Daniel outlined the dangers of playing on or around building sites, even when they are quiet, reminding children that large vehicles can have difficulty seeing small children, that scaffolding, bricks and pipes can collapse causing injury, and that sand can hide sharp metal and glass.

Children were also given high-visibility vests to improve their safety when out on school trips or when travelling to and from school.

Daniel says: "I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to speak to local children about what we’re doing at The Coppice, and to highlight the dangers associated with playing near any construction site.

“Youngsters are always very interested in the changes they see around them. However, with the school holidays, it would be easy for children to see the development as a playground.”

The Coppice lies within the heart of the new National Forest, with woodland trails and acres of grasslands on the doorstep. The area will also be well served by new bus services and cycleway routes, while a new link road to the south will serve the development along with traffic-free pedestrian networks.
