Burton Albion player Michael Simpson swapped the football pitch for a classroom recently when he visited Victoria Community School to award prizes in a design competition launched by Bryant Homes.
The house builder, whose Regency Square development is in Burton upon Trent, asked pupils at the primary school on Victoria Road to design a show home bedroom fit for a Burton Albion fan, in celebration of the team’s promotion into the Football League.
Aqsa Butt, 10, won first prize for her thoughtful design which included a football for a light, a rug which looked like a football pitch and a Burton Albion quilt cover and pillow. Nine year old Intisham Kiani won second prize for his creation, which used the team colours to striking effect, and Joshua Grubb was highly commended for his entry.
Michael Simpson and Bryant Homes’ regional sales manager Rita Tyler awarded prizes of WHSmith vouchers to each pupil and gave a ‘Man of the Match’ trophy and goalie gloves to the school, which has a passionate football team.
Anne Wallace, regional sales and marketing director, comments: “We’d like to thank Victoria Community School for taking part in this fun competition and we have really enjoyed looking at all the children’s wonderful designs. The children had clearly thought very carefully about how to incorporate Burton Albion’s striking team colours in to their creations and we’re delighted to award Aqsa and Intisham their prizes. Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen better watch out as this could be the start of two fantastic careers in interior design!”
